Tips for learning electric guitar for greenhorns

1.) Find a comfortable and calm rehearsal space.

might appear to be an obvious first tip, but I believe it’s extremely pertinent to scout out someplace that you can practice without interruption. It’s also very helpful to practice your guitar in a silent place so that you can not only concentrate but you want to be able to hear the notes and timbre coming from your acoustic guitar. You want to be able to hear if the notes you are playing are making any other sounds than the notes that are being played such as fret buzzing.

2.) Limit your practice time.

This might seem counter-productive but you want to limit your practice time to a half hour or forty five mins. It’s very critical when your first starting out cuase you want to give your fingertips time to get accustomed to pressing on the strings. After awhile your fingers will form calluses which will make it much easier to bear down on the strings without discomfort. You don’t want to be like Bryan Adams “played it till my fingers bled, was the summer of sixty nine”

3.) Use a metronome.

If you don’t have one you should get one. This will help you with your timing and help you be able to play with other people. You can and should start off very slow with any piece that you are practicing and only increase the speed once you have it down. If you don’t have a metronome you can probably find something on the web help you keep your timing.

4.) Be Patient.

Learning anything for the first time can be a challenge but with incremental steps towards guitar proficiency you will be sounding good in no time. I can still remember when I first picked up the guitar, it didn’t sound good but I kept at it.

5.) Enjoy yourself.

Whether you want to be the next rock star or just a casual player there’s no reason to pursue something that makes you unhappy. I truly hope playing the guitar brings all the joy it has brought to me.
